Been BUILDING

October 14, 2009

Getting ready for the upcoming Vegas event, I’ve been working to finish up several airplanes to fly. I plan on bringing the following:

Model Tech 84″ Super Fli

Model Tech Mini Mach Racer

Phase 3 Prototype Mini Mustang

Phase 3 Squal 4S with Thrust Vector

BH Models Gilmore Red Lion Racer

And the BIG DADDY…

120″ ASM B17 Flying Fortress “Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby” (look it up!). It’s a MONSTER.

All are electric power of course, and all except for the B17 have already flown and are GREAT! So, assuming they all survive the final “get-ready” flights next week, we’ll have quite the line up of planes to fly.

So, if you’re in Vegas for the Fun Fly 24/25 stop by Bennet Memorial Field and Check the planes, the Hobby People setup (Mike  and Mark are bringing a stack of planes too!), and just say “Hi”.

I hope to see you there!

ProPeak Cavalier Charger

September 28, 2009
New Cavalier Multi-Charger - VERY NICE

New Cavalier Multi-Charger - VERY NICE

Some of you may or may not have noticed that Hobby People sells the ProPeak Brand. I think a lot of you have considering how many Prodigy II chargers we’ve sold in the last couple of years. This was a great charger but it didn’t offer balancing.

ProPeak, a brand developed by Ripmax in the UK, has been working on an entirely new line of ProPeak battery chargers. The first one is this great, very versatile, easy to use, charger, the Cavalier. While not named for my wife’s Alma Mater (the Santiago Cavaliers), the charger’s name I think fits. The charger, in my opinion, is really best in class and has a lot to be Cavalier about.

I’ve been using one for a couple of months and it’s simply flawless.

Here’s what it does/what I like about it…

Charges from a 12V battery or power supply and works equally well with both.

Screen is REALLY easy to read, even in the Sun.

Charges every battery pack I’m using right now. Single cell Li-PO for my little Mini Spitfire, 4 cell 2500 for my Squall, the 2 5 cell 4000mAh batteries from my Super Fli, the 8 cell NiMH cells in my TX, the 4 cell nimh RX battery in my Super Fli, the 12V Lead Acid battery in my glow tote box,.. I could go on but you get the idea.

The balance taps in the side work with many of the Chinese cells used in many RTF products. The included balance adapter works with the current Impulse balance tap and other similar plugs such as the ones used on Thunder Power. There are other adaptors available aftermarket from ProPeak that will make it work with every balance tap type I could find.

The charger has an optional thermal sensor. So, if your battery gets too hot during charge, the charger shuts off.

Note that it has both balance and non-balance charge modes so if you don’t want to balance charge, you don’t have to. Non-Balance charging is faster when recharging at the field.

It’s a quality unit that simply works and isn’t that what you want in a charger?

Model Tech 3Demon

July 7, 2009

This past weekend, Mike Did NOT go flying, but Russ did! So, from Russ Greaves here in the CS, dept here is the RussGoesFlying Report on the 3Demon:

Russ's 3Demon with the RDS8000 Radio

Russ's 3Demon with the RDS8000 Radio

This 3Demon has been flying for about 2 years now. It is powered with a KMS Quantum 4120/05 motor with a Castle ESC and an Impulse 4 cell, 4000mAh battery. Prop is an APC 13×5

It has Hitec servos in it and a Airtronics RDS8000.  EDIT: Russ Tells me that I am thinking of an earlier prototype with Hitec Servos. This 3Demon that he has been flying has the Airtronics Digital 94761z Metal Gear Micro servos in it. The receiver was changed to the new 7 channel 2.4GHz Airtronics receiver that just arrived into stock. It’s good to get 1st hand flying experience on the latest products. As expected, the receiver worked flawlessly. The antenna extensions make it easy to get the antennas away from servo wires. As you can see in the pictures, one of the antennas is mounted vertically up into the canopy, thus it is up and away from all the power wires too. So, even though the 3Demon fuselage is small, the antennas are easily mounted away from the power system to maximize range.

The 3Demon is made for this electric motor and has the wood mount stand off included. It also has a nice battery access hatch through the canopy so there is no need to take apart the airplane to change the battery.

The airplane light, nimble, and easy to fly. It feels like an oversized parkflyer.

3Demon from Model Tech – Teaser

July 1, 2009

On my quest to build a new plane and feature it here, I had a request to see the 3Demon. I have already built one of those so there’s no looking back! But Russ in our Customer Service dept has one and has been flying it for more than a year. He’s got a nice video up at youtube too.

We’ll be posting pictures, link to the video, specs on the setup, and comments from Russ here in the next few days! Meanwhile, I’m still deciding.. What to Build Next?!?!?!?

Receiver Voltage

June 26, 2009

Maybe it’s that there are so many packs available, maybe it’s that wide-spread insanity has suddenly taken grip of the hobby. I’ve never seen so many insane questions about voltage for receivers….

OK, Here goes….

The Airtronics Receivers are designed for battery packs with a nominal voltage of 4.8 to 6.0 volts. Specifically, that is the voltage range of a 4-5 cell Ni-MH and Ni-CD battery. YES, these receivers are designed to be used with 4-5 cell Ni-MH and Ni-CD batteries.

Yes, I understand that a 5 cell battery peaks at a higher voltage. That is OK. The receiver is designed to work with these batteries.

If you use A123 cells which have a nominal voltage of 6.6v, you are at the very top of the voltage range for these receivers. The receiver as well as some servos are not designed for this voltage range. However, in most cases it works just fine. You will NOT destroy anything by using a voltage range of this type. BUT if any of the servos twitch or jitter, it may simly be you’re out of the voltage range. Not all batteries work exactly the same and not all servos can handle batteries with a nominal voltage of 6.6v

IF you are using a 2 cell Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer pack (Li-PO), you MUST use a voltage regulator AND that regulator should be of the “switching type” and able to handle the current draw of your servos.

So, there you have it… 4 and 5 cell Ni-MH and Ni-CD packs are perfectly fine. A123 2 cell packs are “on the edge”, and 2 cell Li-PO and Li-ION battiers REQUIRE a voltage regulator.

Note that the computer in our receivers does not “reset” until under 2.0V, thus you don’t have to worry about brown out because if you’re having brown-out from overloading your receiver, the servos will be the FIRST indicator because they will stop working. Most servos do not work much below 2.75-3.0v or so.

The New Hotness – BH Models Gilmore Oil “Red Lion Racer” 46 Size ARF

June 15, 2009

Some models are simply special. This is one of those models. This is the new Red Lion Racer from BH Models. This Golden Age Scale Aircraft is truly a work of art in ARF format. CHECK IT OUT…

Gilmore Low Side 800x600

1. Fiberglass Cowling with Radial engine Detail. Factory cut out and painted. Has enough airflow too so no major mods are needed.

2. Cockpit is finished. There’s a dash, a pilot, and the windshield is installed.

3. Scale wheel covers. The wheels stick out enough to be practical too.

4. Scale markings throughout. I love the tail shots. The plane simply looks awesome.

5. Installed Wing Fairings. The flairs on the side of the fuselage that blend the fuselage to the top of the wing are Built-in and properly covered. They are NOT Plastic add-ons.

6. Covering is Oracover. Scale markings are decals.

7. It may have a short nose but it properly balances with a 46 two stroke! Yep, it works with a 2 stroke.

8. We installed a 4120/05 on extensions with no problem. So going brushless is going to work out just fine.

I’m famous now.. Airage posted my seminar about 2.4Ghz use …

May 1, 2009

Mike’s Podcast at Airage

I gave a seminar at Toledo about the basics of 2.4Ghz for use in airplanes. Had a pretty good crowd show up. Airage recorded it. Click on the link and you too can hear me stumble over words as I talk about 2.4Ghz basic use and tips and information.

It’s fun to give these types of presentations when everyone in the audience is so nice. It really was a great crowd and they seemed to really like it.

Happy New Year!

January 1, 2009

Happy 2009

Thank you to everyone for an exciting 2008. Professionally and personally there were huge changes made, huge challenges overcome, and great friends and acquaintances made.

To each of my friends and acquaintances and readers of my blog I want to explain the delays in responses and posts. In case you haven’t noticed, most of the time my responses have been slow and typically short. Since October, we have been making huge changes at Hobby People to better serve our customers. This has simply occupied a LOT of my time. Of course, at home there’s been a lot of time consuming activities too. My olded boy started college, my 16 year old has become increasingly active in sports and school, and my girl seems like she lives at the dance studio these days and that has been quite a challenge since she is so active at school now that she started middle school ( the kids sure don’t stay little for long, do they?)

For many of you, I’ve pointed out that we’re reworking our entire marketing campaign (at Hobby People, I’m directly involved with this aspect of our company on a daily basis). However, before we could make that happen, we needed to first change some infrastructure. I’m excited to say that most of those changes have been made and we have an AMAZING team with a more dynamic structure.

That’s a lot of hoopla for something that I think is very cool….

  1. Customer service has consolidated and our core staff now handles, among other things, Mail Order Toll Free Line, Global Services Phone Calls, Dealer Service Phone Calls, and Service and Mail Order Emails.

  2. Each person on that staff is a modeler of one sort or another.

  3. Our R&D staff is now directly involved in customer service which means many times, when customers call in, they talk to the staff that test flew or drove the very products they’re inquiring about.

  4. Simply put, it’s modelers serving modelers.

Check out this list of our core Hobby People Service Team Members:

Minh P. – Airtronics Lead Technician. Minh has been with Airtronics for 17 years and pretty much knows in his head everything there is to know about every Airtronics item every made.

Jack Albrecht – Airtronics Technical Advisor (operates the Airtronics 800 tech-line). Jack, like Minh, has seemingly been with Airtronics “forever” and yet has been in the industry far longer as he was part of the leadership of Kraft Radios. Jack’s an AMA hall-of-famer who simply is an amazing modeler. (A Hall-of-Fame member on our staff!?!?!?! How lucky am I! Pretty cool, isn’t it!)

Todd Nicholson – Technical Writer. Todd is a professional builder who simply has decades of achievement and experience. What’s better is that he’s worked at Hobby People in several positions so he truly understands the needs of our customers. Todd not only writes many of our manuals but now troubleshoots samples and even helps monitor our forums and emails.

Kyle Gittins – Mail Order Manager. Kyle, a “sport modeler” has 1st hand experience in most aspects of the hobby and has a mind for the technical. Like Todd, Kyle has been active at Hobby People for a long time and is dedicated to providing great customer service.

Craig Kaplan – Product Manager and Airtronics Team Manager. Craig is our “car guy”. If there’s anything you want to know about cars, Craig’s our guy. He’s excelled at everything he’s done at Hobby People from Store Manager to Race Director, from Product Manager to Team Manager, Craig truly loves the hobby, truly cares about our customers, and enjoys working with “the Team”.

Tiffany K – Service Phone Operator. You might say “what, a girl? What does she know about the hobby?!?!?!” Tiffany has cars and helicopters and simply gets a kick out of the hobby. What’s better is that she’s so dedicated to helping customers. Tiffany may not be with us as a career (she’s studying to have a career in medicine) but she brings a nurturing and caring side to our staff that’s special and unique. No one is more level-headed or cares more about taking care of customers, day in and day out. She, like so many women before her, points out that the hobby is truly a family activity that can be enjoyed by everyone, young and old, men and women.

Farrell F. – Customer Service Assistant Manager. Farrell is knowledgeable in many areas of the hobby. However, I like to think of him as our resident heli-expert. He’s flown many of the 450 heli’s on the market and is our go-to guy for heli setup questions. Farrell is continuing his education right now in electronics as well making him a great help in Airtronics Service when he’s not on the phone helping customers with their helis!

John Greenshields – Engine Technician. John is my father (I’m a 2nd generation modeler and Hobby People employee…) and was Hobby People’s 1st employee when it was opened in 1972. John’s retired but helps us with Engine service. Why? He’s still very active in the hobby and has 40 years of engine experience! And, engine service is at most a part time job (we simply don’t get that many repairs!) so it fits his lifestyle.

Russ Greaves – Aircraft Technician. Russ came to us through the Fountain Valley retail store. Russ is an active modeler who simply does a GREAT job helping Todd and I sort out prototypes, test samples, building displays, and working at trade-shows! Russ is really active with electric aircraft and has a TON of modeling experience. Most weekends you can find Russ at the flying field or occasionally at Disneyland with his girlfriend. When it comes to electrics, Russ is our go-to guy!

You can imagine my excitement when I presented with a way to have this staff working directly with customers! And now that idea is a reality!

Marketing restructure. For those of you who shop with us, I’ll bet you noticed some aggressive sales and promotions since Christmas. We had over 100 items on sale on our website and in our stores, we are now able to offer the same low prices we offer in our stores on-line, and our dealers can participate in these promotions too! Right now we’ve got a coupon AND free shipping online. That coupon is good in the store too and can be applied to items already on sale!

In the world of business this is a volatile time when we find many companies raising prices. We think this is the wrong thing to do in the hobby industry. We’ve gone back to our partners in the hobby industry and tried to find ways to reduce prices, have sales with deeper discounts, and to simply make the hobby more affordable with lower prices and, more fun because you can trust that what you purchase is backed by a customer service dept that cares.

As far as advertising, watch ONLINE. Our ads are going all online, our promotions will be delivered to our customers mainly via email, and you can bet this type of advertising is dynamic, fun, and faster paced. I’ve always hated magazine advertising because you have to make the ads 3 or 4 months in advance! Online, you will see we can act FAST. It’s exciting.

2009 at Hobby People is going to be an amazing and exciting year. The hobby is promising to be exciting and interesting, filled with some really cool and innovative products. Personally, I’ll say that I’m sorry for my lack of responses some days, but rest assured, that will change for the better too!

I wish you all a very Happy NEW YEAR. Let’s make 2009 memorable, exciting, and fun.

Mike Greenshields

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS — AVIATION STYLE

December 23, 2008

Twas the night before Christmas, and out on the ramp,
Not an airplane was stirring, not even a Champ.
The aircraft were fastened to tiedowns with care,
In hopes that come morning, they all would be there.
The fuel trucks were nestled, all snug in their spots,
With gusts from two-forty at 39 knots.
I slumped at the fuel desk, now finally caught up,
And settled down comfortably, resting my butt.
When the radio lit up with noise and with chatter,
I turned up the scanner to see what was the matter.
A voice clearly heard over static and snow,
Called for clearance to land at the airport below.
He barked his transmission so lively and quick,
I’d have sworn that the call sign he used was “St. Nick”.
I ran to the panel to turn up the lights,
The better to welcome this magical flight.
He called his position, no room for denial,
“St. Nicholas One, turnin’ left onto final.”
And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Rutan-built sleigh, with eight Rotax Reindeer!
With vectors to final, down the glideslope he came,
As he passed all fixes, he called them by name:
“Now Ringo! Now Tolga! Now Trini and Bacun!
On Comet! On Cupid!” What pills was he takin’?
While controllers were sittin’, and scratchin’ their head,
They phoned to my office, and I heard it with dread,
The message they left was both urgent and dour:
“When Santa pulls in, have him please call the tower.”
He landed like silk, with the sled runners sparking,
Then I heard “Left at Charlie,” and “Taxi to parking.”
He slowed to a taxi, turned off of three-oh
And stopped on the ramp with a “Ho, ho-ho-ho…”
He stepped out of the sleigh, but before he could talk,
I ran out to meet him with my best set of chocks.
His red helmet and goggles were covered with frost
And his beard was all blackened from Reindeer exhaust.
His breath smelled like peppermint, gone slightly stale,
And he puffed on a pipe, but he didn’t inhale.
His cheeks were all rosy and jiggled like jelly,
His boots were as black as a cropduster’s belly.
He was chubby and plump, in his suit of bright red,
And he asked me to “fill it, with hundred low-lead.”
He came dashing in from the snow-covered pump,
I knew he was anxious for drainin’ the sump.
I spoke not a word, but went straight to my work,
And I filled up the sleigh, but I spilled like a jerk.
He came out of the restroom, and sighed in relief,
Then he picked up a phone for a Flight Service brief.
And I thought as he silently scribed in his log,
These reindeer could land in an eighth-mile fog.
He completed his pre-flight, from the front to the rear,
Then he put on his headset, and I heard him yell, “Clear!”
And laying a finger on his push-to-talk,
He called up the tower for clearance and squawk.
“Take taxiway Charlie, the southbound direction,
Turn right three-two-zero at pilot’s discretion”
He sped down the runway, the best of the best,
“Your traffic’s a Grumman, inbound from the west.”
Then I heard him proclaim, as he climbed through the night,
“Merry Christmas to all! I have traffic in sight.”

This has been passed around quite a bit this year, but for all you pilots out there, both R/C and Full Size, I thought you’d get a kick out of it. Thanks to Mike Braun who forwarded it to me from Glen Kratz, Vice President of the Temecula Valley Flyers.

It’s the Holiday Season!

December 6, 2008

OK, I’m guilty… It’s been truly FOREVER since I’ve posted anything! I appreciate everyone who’s read and commented and I hope I didn’t make anyone feel like I abandoned them or the blog here. The last couple of months are always crunch time for us at work. This year was simply busier than most.

Let’s get back to it!

Product is the name of the game here and in the last 2 months, we’ve been working EXTRA hard to get everything done and out for you. Look at the list of new stuff we’ve released in the last few months!

Phase 3 – Mini Spitfire

http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/107117.asp

I like this one because it’s tiny, but in the air it still flies great. It’s an OUTDOOR airplane even though it’s small. It’s zippy and fun. And , it doesn’t come with a radio so you can just drop in a receiver from a radio you already use and you’re good to go. The Receiver from the RDS8000 fits, no problem!

I mentioned this one earlier this year, but I will again. The Mini Mach Racer came in from Model Tech.  It’s small and fast and will take a pretty wide range of small, hot motors.

http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/123779.asp

The ASM Big Sukhoi arrived last week. Perfect for a Mark 1.35 or OS 140, this is a nice plane that has scale looks and flies well. I think it’s a value at 250.00 too.

http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/190123.asp

For the big planes, you need big servos. The new Airtronics 94780M servo has 423 in-oz of torque, it’s a standard size servo, and it delivers that power on 6.0V (It does not require a 2 cell lipo to deliver this power). I know, our competition now makes a standard size servo that runs on a 2 cell lipo direct. But here’s what I don’t get.. It only produces 40 in-oz of torque more than the 94780M and it costs 75.00 MORE!!!! The 94780M is only 125.00 bucks, making it the most powerful servo, with the lowest price, in its class. I think everyone will be pleased with the performance. It’s impressive.

http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/474380.asp

BH released a ton of new planes. For electric:

BH52 J-3 Cub Electric, the BH53 Decathlon Electric, the BH55 Extra 260 Electric, the smaller BH43 Trojan Electric, and the very impressive BH 51 B-25 Mitchell (with retracts!).

They’ve also released a P-40 for Glow. This plane is a 91 size plane with a 40 size price tag. Normal price is 200.00 and for the holiday season it’s 170.00 And… That’s with retracts!

Check them all out here:

http://www.hobbypeople.net/mfr/bhorse01.asp

VQ has released a TON of planes as well.

http://www.hobbypeople.net/mfr/vqmdl01.asp

The highlights:

Dago Red 46 seems to have a TON of interest., the new 60 size Hien’s are simply stunning, and the 46 size zeros have attracted a LOT of attention. But let’s not overlook it, there’s TONS of planes there. VQ has by far the widest selection of Warbirds in the market today. Scroll through the list, I think you’ll be blown away.

Ultrafly has released what I think is the most beautiful private aviation aircraft on the market, the Cirrus SR-22. Elegant yet practical. Fuselage is fiberglass and the canopy removes very easily for battery access. The wing is plug-in and easily removed for transport. The firewall as a built-in sub-firewall that places the motor in the right spot without much work and it has air inlets built in to cool the battery. This is a superior design like no other in its class.
