Starting Off 2012 Right with a Successful Maiden Flight

N-Tech Jets is working to bring out several jets for 2012. One of those jets is the Hawk. We test flew a sample today using electric power. As you may have seen in my previous post about this plane, Larry Wolfe at Jet Hangar Hobbies helped out by building the prototype sample. He installed his E-Turbax Fan with custom Neu Motor controlled by a brand new Ice 2 160HV Castle Creations ESC. Battery is 6500mAh 12S Li-PO. Radio is SD-10G. Retracts are N-Tech Jets retracts and struts and control system designed for the Hawk.

Larry brought it out to PVMAC today, Jan 1, 2012, for it’s first flight. And what a GREAT flight! Take off was perfect, flight performance looked GREAT, and landing was SMOOTH!

The Hawk will be available 2nd Quarter 2012 from Hobby People and N-Tech Jets Dealers. It’s an awesome 68″ wing span, 21 pound, 120mm EDF high performance model. What a GREAT flyhing airplane!

The N-Tech Jets Hawk is a winner. I’m looking forward to a hundred more successful flights!

Items Used to Complete our Panther

 

Radio:

We recommend an 8-10 channel radio for convenience although technically the Panther only has 6 functions: Ailerons, Rudder, Elevator, Flaps, Throttle, and Retracts.

 

Qty 7 94851 Metal Gear Servos (or similar)

Qty 1 94722 Standard Servo (or similar)

qty 2 750mm Extensions (for tail servos)

qty 4 500mm Extensions (from wing joint to receiver)

qty 2 300mm Extensions (from Ail servos to wing joint)

qty 1 100mm Extension (from steering servo to receiver)

(If your radio is only 6-8 channel, you’ll need QTY 3 Y-harnesses for the Aileron and Flaps and Steering/rudder servos).

Servo Lead retainers (Heat shrink, molded clips, whatever is your preference

Receiver Battery: We recommend either a 5 cell Ni-MH pack of 1600 or more mAh rating, or a Li-FE 6.6v receiver battery with 1600mAh or more rating.

(We used the Neu Motor for the E-Turbax fan although other motor/fan systems of this size and rating will work)

-Castle 160HV (The power system does not draw this much current but EDF systems tend to be very demanding of the ESC, thus we use an ESC rated a little higher than necessary)

-12S 5000 to 6500mAh LiPO packs, minimum 40C rating (The airplane is setup for using two separate 6S packs sometimes called Saddle Packs)

-6mm Gold Connectors or similar (Castle 6.5mm connectors for example)

-Mounting Screws for the Fan Unit (different fans may have different requirements, we used #4 x 3/4 Dubro Socket Head Wood Screws for mounting the E-Turbax Fan)

 

Other Items:

-The fuselage can be broken down into two parts, so we installed air-line connectors at the fuselage break, it required 3. Robart, Jet Hangar Hobbies, or other similar air-line connectors will work.

-Glues: We used Wood Glue, Epoxy, and C/A (instant glue)

-Threadlock, (blue or semi-permanent, do NOT use “red” or permanent thread lock)

-Tape: Gaffer’s Tape or bi-directional Packing Tape will work. This is to seal off the air between duct joints and around the motor wires where they exit the exhaust air duct.

-Basic tools (file, wire cutter, pliers, hobby knife, various metric hex-drivers, small drill bits, drill, etc)

-Paint to detail the cockpit (Optional)

-Small amont of fiberglass cloth (3/4 to 1 oz weight)

You’re Assistance Please, I seemed to have mis-placed the last 4 months of 2010.

I saw this on twitter and I thought, “How Appropriate”. Truly it seems like the last few months have simply vanished. My kids are bigger (Kids, my two oldest sons are now in College!) there’s new things to do, the holidays are here, and it feels like it should be JULY.

Now that Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is fast-approaching, I’m reminded of why retail in the hobby business is so much fun. New stuff shows up last-minute (it’s always fun to get new stuff, even at work), and we have SO MANY new people coming into the hobby!

We now have a complete boat line (Joysway), The U-2 Spylane has arrived including a version that is i-Bind (2.4GHz compatible with Airtronics transmitters!), a new sport park-flyer call the Dash 1M, and 3 new cars (along with a myriad of other cool stuff).  If any of these products interest you I urge you to check them out. They are great. They look great, and most importantly, they work great. Fly the U-2 and you’ll see what I’m mean. Never have I flown an EDF that’s so incredibly easy to fly!

Today I found out we’ve sold simply a TON of our new cars. I know, it’s not a plane, but one of the cars is really a dedicated entry-level truck (called the Vertex) and it’s simply flying off the shelf and everyone of them we’re told is going to a new car-hobbyist! Not exactly bad news!

A little catching up…….

What have I been doing, since I’ve neglected my poor blog? Well flying mostly (and getting ready at work for 4th quarter!). My JHH Panther is coming along although not nearly as far along as Larry’s. He’s flown his, and I’m still sanding on the wings.

Have only just started my Pacemaker. You’d think it’d be done, but there’s just been no time to build.

I DID fly our new BH Models Stuka Electric. Wow, what a great plane. Stuka’s are said to be hard to fly, this one is a pussycat. Beautiful size too. I have a 10cell 5000mAh Hobby People battery, a KMS 5331/10 motor, 80 amp Hi-Voltage ESC, and of course Airtronics all around. NEAT flying airplane.

Ok, I’m caught up, I’ve found at least the last month of 2010 and if you’re finding yourself in the same boat I am (seems like time is truly flying by), don’t miss out. Have a wonderful holiday with family, friends, and hobbies.

Fun Fun Stuff

Well, some time ago I was poking around for direction.. what to build next?

Will start a build page for each of these, but I’m now working on 3 planes (with a little help from my friends…)

1. OK Model Kit of the Irwin Ohlsson Pacemaker. An RC version of Irwin’s free-flight CA STATE CHAMP.. from 1937. This is a beautiful Cabin model.

2. Jet Hangar Hobbies Panther, EDF. Yep, jet bug bit me. I was really impressed with Larry Wolfe’s Panther. Air brakes, drooping leading edge mixed with flaps, retractable tail hook, etc. Very cool and give or take 175mph. Yep, speed and scale.. Very cool

3. BH Models ARF 46 size Ryan STA. Civilian. Pretty plane. Very refined. Covered in Oracover.

All 3 will be electric. That way I can fly them just about anywhere.

Squall Yet another HOT release of 2009

Squall Great Flying EDF

 

This Jet is SO much fun. First, it’s fast. With the 4 cell setup it really scoots. For me, however, what really makes it fun is the Vectored Thrust setup. Have full 3 axis control which in a nose-high attitude with zero ground speed! Yes. This thrust vector setup is good clean fun. Flat spins are just amazing.

And in case you wanted to roll 3-4 times a second, no problem, it does that too. Very cool

Because the Squall is lightweight it’s easy to launch. It doesn’t require any kind of launcher. One other great thing.. the Vectored Thrust system will fit on an EF-16 too!
